Virgin Media has announced the largest UK roll-out of fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband technology to date in the UK, pledging to connect one million properties and businesses by 2020 as part of its Project Lightning network expansion. This is great news for SMBs – and great news for resellers too.
It means that many more small businesses all over the UK will be able to get a super-fast connection that uses fibre optics all the way into their premises. Until now, that had not always been possible and where it was, it could be expensive. For Virgin resellers, that will expand the available market potential even more. SMBs have already shown how receptive they are to Virgin’s ultra-fast broadband proposition and this initiative will accelerate enthusiasm and uptake even more.
The project will link four million homes and businesses to the Virgin Network in total – one million via FTTP. Overall, around 17 million premises should be connected to Virgin’s network by 2019. It is one of the biggest investments in broadband infrastructure made in the UK over the last decade and it makes Virgin Media the largest provider of fibre services in the UK.
By bringing FTTP to the UK on such a grand scale, Virgin is making a major commitment and giving SMBs every reason to believe that they can shake off the limitations that sub-standard bandwidth puts on their growth.
As Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media CEO said: “While some companies talk a good game, Virgin Media is putting its money where its mouth is and laying fibre to the premises alongside our superior HFC network – delivering the fastest widely-available broadband speeds. Our £3bn investment to bring ultrafast connectivity to more parts of the UK is not just about better broadband; it’s about future-proofing the country’s network infrastructure with the best and most modern technology.”
Virgin Media already offers ultra-fast broadband speeds of up to 300Mbps to businesses and this new investment means that many more SMBs and resellers will be able to benefit from its advanced technology and commitment.
Virgin has estimated that the project as a whole could bring up to £8bn worth of economic benefits to the UK economy – in our view it will be worth much more. By providing access to higher speed services, Virgin Media is giving SMBs all over the country a foundation to build on. With ultra-fast broadband, businesses can have the confidence to invest innovate, and grow.
