The news that the Competition and Markets Authority has provisionally cleared the £12.5bn merger between BT and EE (see report here and various others) should be positive news for businesses and consumers in the UK.
The deal is being allowed to go ahead as it is not expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition. In our view, it is likely to sharpen-up competition and accelerate the advancement of new products and services – both by BT and EE and their competition. That’s got to be good news for customers.
Today, businesses and individuals need much greater bandwidth and download speeds. And everyone wants the flexibility to access data services when they are on the move. Services are a lot better than they were on both fixed and mobile, but there is still much more that can be delivered, not only in terms of speed, but flexibility. The technology and the infrastructure is there, so it’s just a matter of bringing the right companies and services together. BT with its fixed-line and communications infrastructure and EE with its advanced mobile network, are ideal partners in this regard.
Although BT and EE are likely to remain as defined entities offering different services, we will certainly see much more co-operation and bundling of fixed and mobile services once the merger is done and dusted in a few months time. That should lead to more flexible packages that combine fixed and mobile connections and allow users to move seamlessly between WiFi and 4G wherever they are, with voice as well as data always routed across the most effective and cost-efficient path. This will also open the door for closer integration with hosted VoIP services and unified comms and CRM apps.
These new and more flexible kinds of services are likely to be introduced by BT and EE next year. In response, the rivals will need to step up their game. That should mean more options and choices for both business and home users. Of course, you will need to be sure that you are making the right choice.
